Winter storms and cold temperatures can be very dangerous. Stay safe and healthy by planning ahead. Prepare your home and vehicles, prepare for power outages and outdoor activity, and check on older adults. If you are prepared for the hazards of winter, you are more likely to stay safe and healthy when temperature start to fall. Prepare your home by winterizing it, check your heating systems, and install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Prepare your vehicle by servicing the radiator and maintaining and antifreeze level, check your tires' tread, keep your gas tank over half full, and prepare a winter emergency kit to keep in your car. When outside, wear appropriate outdoor clothing, sprinkle cat litter or sand on icy patches, and learn safety precautions to follow when outdoors. Also make sure you have stocked food that needs no cooking or refrigeration, stock water, ensure that your cell phone is fully charged, and keep an up-to-date emergency kit for when hazardous weather arrives.
