Mayor Kraham, First Ward Action Council Announce Open House for New Affordable Housing

$8.4M NoMa Revitalization Project Nears Completion

(BINGHAMTON, N.Y.)—Mayor Jared M. Kraham joined First Ward Action Council Executive Director Jerry Willard on Thursday to announce plans for an open house at the North of Main (NoMa) Revitalization affordable housing project.

“A shortage of quality affordable housing across Broome County has left too many of our families living in substandard and unacceptable conditions,” said Mayor Jared M. Kraham. “In Binghamton, we’re choosing to lead on solving this crisis, partnering with developers and organizations like the First Ward Action Council to support the creation of affordable housing. This project builds on the revitalization of the North of Main neighborhood and transforms several blighted, dangerous properties into safe housing for residents.”

An open house will be held Friday from noon to 5 p.m. at 43 North St.

The $8.4 million North of Main Revitalization project is creating 23 units of quality affordable housing across seven sites in the NoMa neighborhood. The project, which the First Ward Action Council began in 2021, is rehabilitating six multi-family buildings and constructing a new four-unit building on a vacant lot on Walnut Street. Four fully accessible units are set aside to provide preference to individuals with physical disabilities.

“We are pleased to show off one of our just-completed buildings with apartments conveniently close to shopping, services and jobs in downtown Binghamton,” said First Ward Action Council Executive Director Jerry Willard. “This project is the second major investment in the NoMa neighborhood in recent years by the First Ward Action Council, New York State and the City of Binghamton.”

In 2020, the First Ward Action Council completed construction on the Crandall-North Street Revitalization project, which created 37 units of affordable housing and commercial space at scattered locations in NoMa.

Both projects received funding from New York State and the City of Binghamton.

Work is continuing on the North of Main Revitalization project, with a handful of buildings complete and available for rent.

Residents interested in renting one of the new apartments should contact the First Ward Action Council at (607) 772-2850.
