U.S. Rep. Marc Molinaro from New York has announced that the Lifespan Respite Reauthorization Act has been approved by the House Committee on Energy & Commerce with bipartisan support and will now move to the House Floor. This bill aims to provide family caregivers with the necessary relief and support to help them maintain a normal life. Rep. Molinaro introduced the bill in collaboration with U.S. Rep. Tony Cárdenas from California.
The Lifespan Respite Care Program, which offers temporary care or supervision for individuals of all ages with disabilities and chronic conditions, has been a crucial source of support for families. In New York, the New York State Caregiving and Respite Coalition utilizes federal funding from this program to train numerous volunteer respite providers.
With the expiration of the Lifespan Respite Care Program looming in fiscal year 2024, Rep. Molinaro's bill seeks to reauthorize the program for an additional 4 years, ensuring continuity of vital services for family caregivers across the nation.
Expressing his gratitude, Rep. Molinaro stated, "I'm thankful to the Energy and Commerce Committee for recognizing the importance of the Lifespan Respite Care Program and sending my bill to the House Floor. Family caregivers selflessly provide care to others. They should not have to choose between supporting a loved one and leading a balanced life. It’s only right for us to continue providing them with relief and assistance.”
