Chemung County to Host Free Rabies Vaccination Clinic and Issues Annual Rabies Alert
The Chemung County Health Department, in partnership with the SPCA, is organizing a free rabies vaccination clinic for New York State residents. Erin Walmsley, Supervising Public Health Sanitarian with the Chemung County Health Department, emphasizes the importance of pet owners bringing proof of previous rabies vaccination to receive a three-year certificate for their pets. Ms. Walmsley also advises that each pet should have one adult present, and dog owners should be prepared to clean up after their animals if needed. Additionally, cat owners without carriers are urged to consult clinic staff before removing their pets from their vehicles.
In line with the rabies alert declared by the Commissioner of the New York State Department of Health due to the presence of rabies in terrestrial animals, all dogs, cats, and domestic ferrets in Chemung County are mandated to have rabies vaccinations by 4 months of age. Failure to comply with this requirement may result in fines of up to $200, emphasizing the importance of keeping pets up-to-date with their rabies shots. Christopher J. Moss, County Executive, highlights the significance of the free rabies clinics sponsored by the Chemung County Health Department every four months as an opportunity for residents to ensure their pets are vaccinated.
Furthermore, the Health Department stresses that any bites or potential rabies exposures must be reported promptly. If a pet that is not up-to-date with its rabies vaccinations encounters a rabid or suspect-rabid animal, it may face quarantine or even destruction. However, for pets with current rabies shots, only a booster dose of vaccine is required within 5 days of exposure. The Health Department is available 24/7 to assist individuals who may have been exposed to rabies.
The free rabies vaccination clinic will take place at the Chemung County Fairgrounds on May 4, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Pre-registration is necessary, and more information can be found on Chemung County's website or the Health Department's Facebook page. For inquiries or special assistance at the clinic, individuals can contact the Chemung County Health Department.
