The Chemung County Health Department is offering free rabies vaccination clinics for New York State residents. The clinics will be held at two locations: Banfield Square Park in Van Etten on Friday, October 4, 2024, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., and the Economic Opportunity Program (EOP) in Elmira on Saturday, October 5, 2024, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Pre-registration is required for these clinics. Residents can register through the Chemung County website or the Health Department’s Facebook page. Attendees are asked to arrive at their designated appointment times.
Erin Mensa, a Supervised Public Health Sanitarian with the Chemung County Health Department, emphasized that cats, dogs, and ferrets three months of age or older must be leashed or in a carrier and under adult supervision. "Dog and cat owners should bring proof of a previous rabies vaccination if they wish to receive a three-year certificate for their pets," Mensa said.
Mensa also advised having one adult per pet to ensure smooth operation during the clinics. Dog owners should come prepared to clean up after their animals if needed. Cat owners without carriers should consult clinic staff before removing their pets from vehicles.
New York State law mandates rabies vaccinations for all cats, dogs, and ferrets four months of age or older. Pet owners who fail to comply may face fines up to $200. Free rabies clinics are available at least every four months throughout the year.
