Senator O'Mara has shared his weekly column, focusing on the significance of farming during the holiday season. He emphasizes the tradition of gathering to share meals and reflect on the contributions of farmers in New York State and across America.

A recent report titled "A Profile of Agriculture in New York State" highlights the economic impact of agriculture. State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli states, "Agriculture is an important part of New York State's economy, and farmers make significant contributions to the State." The report notes that farming is a major driver in rural counties, supporting various businesses and employment.

Data from the federal Department of Agriculture indicates that nearly 31,000 farms operate across every county in New York, covering over 21 percent of the state's area. The agricultural sector contributes $2.7 billion to New York's GDP and supports over 163,000 jobs.

New York's farmers have been recognized for their efforts through programs like "Harvest for All," donating eight million pounds of food to regional food banks in 2023. The state ranks highly nationwide for products such as maple syrup, grapes, apples, and dairy products.

The comptroller's report reveals several trends: agritourism income rose by 78% since 2012; research showed farming supported over 163,000 jobs in 2019; farm expenses increased significantly from 2017 to 2022; however, there was a decline in farms and farmland between 2012 and 2022.

DiNapoli warns about challenges facing agriculture: "Volatile commodity prices, labor pressures and extreme weather are adding to the unpredictability of farming." He stresses that policymakers must consider how state policies affect this sector.

As a new legislative session approaches in January, Senator O'Mara urges lawmakers to protect family farms and local food production. He cautions against regulations that could threaten these vital aspects of New York's economy.
