Binghamton University and The Guthrie Clinic have formalized a new research collaboration through a Collaborative Research Agreement (CRA), aimed at enhancing research initiatives to benefit the local community. This agreement introduces standardized guidelines for projects, eliminating repetitive contract reviews and expediting project launches while ensuring compliance and cybersecurity measures are in place.

The agreement was signed by Binghamton University President Harvey Stenger and Guthrie Clinic President and CEO Edmund Sabanegh during a press conference on December 13, 2024. Stenger expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating it would advance research work and enhance patient care at Guthrie.

Dr. Edmund Sabanegh highlighted the potential for greater innovation through this collaboration, emphasizing that it sets a solid framework for meaningful research with real-life impacts.

The partnership's scope includes health care research as well as other fields such as engineering and process improvement. State Senator Lea Webb praised the collaboration as an important milestone that connects academic discovery with clinical expertise to improve healthcare access and outcomes.

This agreement is expected to bring broader community benefits by fostering essential research leading to new discoveries in healthcare practices and technology. Guthrie’s recent expansion into Broome County further strengthens this relationship, offering Binghamton University direct access to Guthrie’s network of specialists.

Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo welcomed the news, noting its potential to inspire future researchers interested in solving healthcare delivery challenges. Stenger also emphasized the significant opportunity for collaboration between both organizations' faculty across disciplines, aiming to combine innovative university research with practical hospital experience for improved health outcomes.
