After 18 years, Dr. Drake M. Lamen will step down from his position as President and CEO of UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital in mid-April. Cecil M. Miller, III, a leader with over three decades in rural healthcare, has been appointed as his successor.
Joe Stagliano, Chair of UHS Chenango Memorial’s Board of Directors, praised Dr. Lamen, saying, “Drake is retiring after a long and meaningful career. He has accomplished much during his tenure here and is leaving our hospital well positioned for the future.”
Dr. Lamen started his medical career in Windsor and joined United Health Services in the early 2000s. He became UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital's President and CEO, as well as its Chief Medical Officer, in 2006. His leadership resulted in over $110 million invested in the hospital, significantly under the Chenango Medical Neighborhood Plan to transform care delivery.
UHS President and CEO John Carrigg noted Dr. Lamen's impact: “His vision has transformed this hospital from one in dire financial straits with aging infrastructure into a financially sustainable organization with flexible, modern spaces ready to meet the current and future needs of this community.”
Stagliano explained that Dr. Lamen informed the board of his retirement plans last summer, providing adequate time to find a successor. The recruitment process involved stakeholders and a specialized executive search firm, resulting in a robust pool of candidates.
Miller, who served as Vice President of Operations at UPMC Chautauqua, emerged as the preferred choice. UHS Chief Operating Officer Kay Boland said of Miller, “Throughout his career, Cecil has focused on elevating access and engagement, promoting patient-centered care, and setting high standards for both quality and safety, all while achieving growth and strong financial results even during the pandemic.”
Stagliano expressed satisfaction with Miller’s selection, stating that he and his wife Lisa plan to relocate to the area. “We believe Cecil’s commitment to community-focused care within a larger healthcare system, his collaborative leadership style, and his level of engagement with staff and community will make him an excellent fit for this key executive leadership role.”
He concluded, “At the end of the day, we all understand this is the most important decision we could make for our hospital and community. We couldn’t be happier with the outcome of the search. We wish Drake well and look forward to welcoming Cecil as the next President and CEO of UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital.”
