Windsor Central School District issued the following announcement on Oct 29.
Halloween came early for Windsor’s youngest remote students. Remote learning teachers Deborah Kalivoda and Janice Sutphin made “Trick or Teach” house calls to kindergarten students on Thursday.
“We’ve been working hard to build a sense of community with our students. We had more instructional materials we wanted our students to have and we thought Halloween would be a great time to do something fun while delivering materials. We couldn’t wait to see our students in their costumes,” said Sutphin.
She wasn’t disappointed. On their first Halloween home visit, Mrs. Sutphin and Mrs. Kalivoda saw students Ava Latini, and Vera and Kora Wilson in full costume.
“This is my first experience with Windsor and it’s been fantastic. They’re bending over backwards to make the kids feel connected,” said Jen Wilson, Vera and Kora’s mother.
Sutphin and Kalivoda made visits to 20 kindergarten students on Thursday and will do the same with 24 first graders students on Friday. The pair are delivering math manipulatives, flash cards, mini-bulletin boards with posted number lines and alphabet sound charts, and packets with guided notes and activities to assist with student learning. Oh yeah, and a little bit of candy.
“It’s amazing, but I wouldn’t expect anything less from the Windsor district. I have kids in the Middle School, 4th grade, 3rd grade, and kindergarten. The teachers have been wonderful and the district has been awesome,” said Jill Latini, Ava’s mother.
“It isn't easy or an ideal situation, but all of us - families, students, district leaders, and teachers - are working hard to ensure that there are great learning opportunities for these students,” said Kalivoda. “Halloween will sure look different for our families, but with a little creativity, we are doing our best to spread some excitement and positivity.”
