Vestal Central School District issued the following announcement on Nov 10.
Since 2004, Vestal Elks Lodge 2508 has donated over 4,700 dictionaries to third-graders in Vestal Schools! This year, despite the challenges, they vowed to continue their tradition of supporting the literacy success of our third-grade students. On November 10, the Elks dropped off their gift to our five elementary schools. They were greeted by staff members who thanked them, and then the dictionaries will be distributed to each third-grade cohort on the day they are in attendance for in-person instruction. Those third-graders learning at home will receive their dictionary in their pick-up materials.
We are very grateful for the continued generous support of our local Elks Lodge. This project is just one of many they undertake in support of education, and they work in conjunction with a national organization, The Dictionary Project. According to The Dictionary Project website, third grade is the dividing line between learning to read and "reading to learn." This is why sponsoring organizations like our Vestal Elks are encouraged to give the dictionaries to students at this grade level.
