Union-Endicott Central School District issued the following announcement on Nov 17.
Golf fan Jeff Whitesel has been coming to the Dick’s Open since its inception, parking across the street at CFJ, which provides parking for fans as a fundraiser for the booster club to help pay for field trips, assemblies, and educational opportunities.
Over the last couple of years, Whitesel met now retired CFJ principal Alicia Boyce and members of the booster club. Because he has been to many tournaments around the country, he knew how parking could be; long walks to the course and hefty parking fees. The parking provided by CFJ is not only within easy walking distance to the tournament but is also relatively inexpensive.
In 2020, the Dick’s Open was canceled due to COVID. When Whitesel learned that, he realized that CFJ would not be able to raise money through the parking. He and his friend Eddie Sheehan decided that they wanted to give a donation to the school to help offset costs that would have normally been covered through the parking fundraiser.
They presented a donation of over $10,000 to the CFJ Boosters. Accepting the check was first-grade teacher and booster treasurer Jessica Carl, CFJ principal Deb Darling and Boyce. Click here to see Fox 40 news story.
Because of COVID, the funds will be used for outreach programs such as Thanksgiving packages for students and families that will include snacks, candy, and earbuds for students.
