Mayor Jared M. Kraham on Tuesday announced a pilot program making blue City garbage bags available for online purchase and delivery through Amazon.

Blue bags remain for sale at local grocery stores, pharmacies and City Hall.

“Binghamton residents now have the option to buy City garbage bags in bulk online and have them delivered to their front door,” said Mayor Jared M. Kraham. “It’s a small but meaningful way we’re improving City services for residents, especially those who have difficulty leaving home, and bringing local government into the 21st century. Thanks to the team at WasteZero for working with City Hall to make an important City service more accessible and convenient.”

Residents can order 20 large City garbage bags through Amazon for $33.60. Delivery is free.

WasteZero, the City’s blue bag vendor, works with more than 400 communities nationwide on refuse collection. The company’s “pay-as-you-throw” trash program, like the one used in Binghamton, aims to reduce municipal solid waste and increase recycling.

Binghamton is the first municipality to offer online purchasing of WasteZero bags to residents.

“Binghamton continues to be a national leader in waste reduction, cutting trash by more than 60 percent with this program,” said Mark Dancy, President of WasteZero. “If other cities in New York followed Binghamton’s lead, we would remove nearly four million tons of recyclable, compostable and reusable material from the trash, saving hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars per year while creating thousands of new jobs in New York.”
