Today in Blasdell, New York, Congressman Nick Langworthy and leaders from Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center highlighted federal legislation aimed at expanding lung cancer research and prevention. The event took place in front of the EDDY, Roswell Park's mobile lung cancer screening unit. The focus was on encouraging community members to utilize available screening services and emphasizing the importance of early detection.

Congressman Langworthy discussed two bipartisan bills he is co-sponsoring to enhance lung cancer prevention efforts. The Lung Cancer Screening and Prevention Act of 2023 (H.R. 6693) proposes that the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services cover FDA-approved lung cancer screening tests without additional review, facilitating quicker access for seniors. Additionally, the Women and Lung Cancer Research and Preventive Services Act of 2024 (H.R. 4534) instructs the Department of Health and Human Services to evaluate lung cancer in women, identify research gaps, and recommend a national strategy as diagnoses among non-smoking women increase.

Lung cancer remains a leading cause of cancer deaths in America, affecting both genders regardless of smoking status. Currently, only 6% of eligible New Yorkers have undergone a lung cancer screening.

"Roswell Park is leading the charge in cancer prevention and research," said Congressman Langworthy. "I'm proud to be their partner at the federal level."

Dr. Candace S. Johnson, President & CEO of Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, stressed their commitment to working with lawmakers to increase access to screenings and drive research efforts through initiatives like EDDY.

"We thank Congressman Langworthy for championing impactful legislation," said Dr. Johnson.

Douglas Vincent from Gowanda shared his experience with EDDY: "Roswell sent me a postcard... it's been over a year since I quit smoking."
