UHS has become the first program in the Greater Binghamton and northern Pennsylvania region to receive The Joint Commission's Gold Seal of Approval for Comprehensive Stroke Center Certification. This certification is recognized as the most advanced stroke certification available from The Joint Commission.
The Joint Commission, an independent, non-profit organization that accredits and certifies healthcare organizations across the United States, provides this certification in collaboration with the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association.
UHS underwent a comprehensive assessment conducted by a team of reviewers from The Joint Commission. This evaluation included compliance with standards such as 24/7 availability of an acute stroke team, comprehensive diagnostic testing services, experience in providing complex stroke treatments, and the ability to simultaneously meet the needs of two complex stroke patients. These standards are developed in consultation with healthcare experts, providers, measurement experts, and patients.
A multidisciplinary team at UHS was formed last year under Dr. Sumeet Multani and Dawn Wage to prepare for this achievement. The team included representatives from various patient care areas like Nursing, Diagnostic Imaging & Radiology, Pharmacy, Laboratory, along with medical staff members involved in the UHS Stroke Program.
Dr. Sumeet Multani expressed confidence in their preparedness to treat complex stroke conditions around the clock: “We have a team prepared to treat the most complex stroke conditions and capable of delivering exceptional outcomes….at any time of the day or night.” He also noted that surveyors were impressed by staff dedication and quality commitment across disciplines.
John M. Carrigg, president and CEO of UHS stated: “This certification is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our stroke team and every UHS employee who supports our stroke patients.”
The Gold Seal symbolizes quality care commitment by recognizing consistent communication and collaboration among all providers throughout patient care processes.
United Health Services Inc., founded in 1981, is a locally owned not-for-profit hospital system serving Greater Binghamton and surrounding counties. It offers a full range of medical services throughout New York’s Southern Tier but is not affiliated with Universal Health Services Inc.
